Propellerheads was a British big beat musical ensemble, formed in 1995 in Bath, England by the duo Will White and Alex Gifford. The essence of their musical style embodies the energetic fusion of electronic music with funk, jazz, and soul influences, culminating in the vibrant sound that characterized the late 90s big beat movement. They are perhaps best known for their 1997 hit "History Repeating," featuring the iconic vocals of Shirley Bassey, which introduced the band's sound to a wider audience.
Their only studio album "Decksandrumsandrockandroll," released in 1998, became a defining work in the big beat genre and solidified their standing in the electronic music scene. This album includes some of their most popular tracks, such as "Spybreak!" which famously underscored an action scene in the movie "The Matrix," and "Take California" - a sonic manifesto of their dynamic musical approach. Although their active years as a group were relatively brief, with the duo parting ways in 2001, Propellerheads left a lasting impact on the electronic music world, as evidenced by their fans celebrating the 20th anniversary of their impactful album.
