Harold Farberman was an American conductor, composer, and percussionist known for his dynamic interpretations and deep commitment to American classical music. A student of the Juilliard School and Tanglewood, he became one of the first percussionists to have a substantial conducting career, working with major orchestras and gaining special recognition for his recordings of Charles Ives’ symphonies. Farberman was also a prolific composer, writing in a range of styles for orchestra, chamber ensemble, and solo instruments.
He founded the Conductors’ Guild and the Conductors Institute, mentoring generations of young conductors and establishing a significant legacy in music education. Throughout his career, Farberman championed American composers, recording works by Ives, Irwin Bazelon, and others, and balancing his love for the standard repertoire with a drive to bring less-heard works into the spotlight. His recordings with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and his own compositions reflect his versatile musical voice and dedication to innovation.
