Mestís is a progressive-rock and jazz fusion project helmed by the accomplished guitarist Javier Reyes, who is also known as a member of the instrumental progressive metal band Animals as Leaders. Reyes, born and raised in Washington, D.C., is of Mexican descent and his heritage significantly influences the music of Mestís, infusing rich, Latin soundscapes with intricate, heavy guitar work that echoes the complexity of math rock and the depth of jazz. Mestís is characterized by its ability to blend these diverse genres into a cohesive sound that is both cerebral and emotive.
Since the inception of Mestís, Reyes has been the primary composer and producer, steering the sonic direction of the project. Beginning with "Basal Ganglia" in 2012, he has steadily released work that showcases his multi-faceted abilities as a musician, including polyrhythmic patterns and lush ambient layers. "Polysemy," released in 2015, continued to expand the project's reach with its rich tapestry of sound. Reyes's 2018 release "Eikasia" further solidified Mestís as a tour de force in the realm of progressive music, incorporating even more elaborate compositions and guest musicians to enhance the project's dynamic range. Most recently, "En Vivo" captures Mestís in a live setting, offering a raw and energetic take on the project’s intricate compositions, such as "Gentle Giant" and "El Mestizo," demonstrating Reyes's virtuosic guitar skills and the fluidity of his supporting band. Mestís stands as a testament to Reyes's talent as a guitarist and composer, often reflecting deeply personal themes and Reyes's own cultural influences.
