The Ad Libs were an American vocal group from Bayonne, New Jersey, best known for their 1965 hit single "The Boy from New York City." Blending doo-wop harmonies with soul and pop influences, the group was fronted by lead singer Mary Ann Thomas, whose strong vocals helped define their signature sound. "The Boy from New York City" became a top ten hit in the U.S. and has since been covered by other artists, including The Manhattan Transfer.
Initially signed to the Blue Cat label, a subsidiary of Red Bird Records, The Ad Libs struggled to replicate the success of their debut hit, although they continued to release music through the 1960s and '70s. Their material is remembered for its catchy melodies, sweet harmonies, and the distinct merging of doo-wop roots with the soul-pop sound of the era. Today, they’re considered a classic one-hit-wonder group, though their contributions to '60s pop-soul continue to resonate with vintage music fans.
