Sarcófago was a pioneering force in the extreme metal scene, hailing from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, and known for their controversial and provocative stance within the heavy music world. Formed in 1985 by vocalist Wagner Lamounier, who had previously been a member of the band Sepultura, Sarcófago was infamous for their raw sound and aggressive imagery, which included anti-Christian and satanic themes. Their music was a furious blend of thrash metal, black metal, and later on, elements of death metal, helping to establish the foundations for what would become the notorious Brazilian metal sound.
Their 1987 debut album "INRI" is considered a landmark record in the black metal genre, marked by its lo-fi production and relentless speed. Following albums such as "Rotting" (1989), "Hate" (1991), "The Laws of Scourge" (1991), and "Crust" (1995) showcased the band evolving their approach to songwriting and production, encompassing a wider range of styles while maintaining the abrasive edge they were known for. By the time they released "The Worst" (1996) and the subsequent EP "Crust" (1997), Sarcófago had already left an indelible mark on the extreme metal landscape. Although they officially disbanded in the year 2000, their legacy continued to influence countless metal acts worldwide, securing their place as one of the most infamous and iconoclastic bands in the genre's history.
