Jay Reatard was the frenetic stage name of Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr., an American musician and songwriter from Memphis, Tennessee, who was a prominent figure in the garage punk and indie rock scenes. Born on May 1, 1980, Reatard began recording music at the young age of 15. Renowned for his prolific output and the raw energy he injected into his performances, he quickly became an underground icon.
His solo career took off after years of playing with various punk bands including The Reatards, Lost Sounds, and Angry Angles. His solo work was marked by a shift towards a more garage rock and power pop-infused punk sound, which was exemplified by his critically acclaimed 2006 album "Blood Visions." This was followed by a relentless series of singles which were later compiled into albums like "Singles 06-07" and "Matador Singles '08." His final studio album, "Watch Me Fall," was released in 2009 and showcased a maturation of his songwriting while maintaining the characteristic urgency for which his music was known. Tragically, Reatard's career was cut short when he passed away on January 13, 2010, at the age of 29, leaving behind a legacy rich in punk ethos and unbridled creativity.
