Iron Butterfly is an American rock band that was established during the wave of psychedelic and hard rock in the late 1960s. Originally formed in San Diego, California, in 1966, the band quickly gained prominence with their heavy, trance-like sound that epitomized the experimental vibe of the era. Despite a number of lineup changes over the years, the core of the band during their most influential period included Doug Ingle (vocals, organ), Ron Bushy (drums), Lee Dorman (bass), and Erik Brann (guitar), though the famed 17-minute anthem "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" was recorded with guitarist Danny Weis and bassist Jerry Penrod.
Iron Butterfly's breakthrough and most celebrated work is the 1968 album "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," which featured the eponymous track that became a counterculture anthem, largely due to its hypnotic beat, memorable riffs, and extended solos. The album went on to achieve monumental success, being certified by the RIAA as the first-ever platinum album and establishing the band as one of the defining acts of the period. Although they never matched the immense success of this release, subsequent albums such as "Ball" and "Metamorphosis" still showcased their prowess and helped solidify their legacy. Despite disbanding in the early 1970s, Iron Butterfly's influence persisted, and they have sporadically reunited for tours and live recordings, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of rock music. Their live recordings such as "Live in Copenhagen" and "Live in Sweden 1971" offer a glimpse into the band's dynamic performances and enduring appeal.
