Velvet Crush is an American power pop band hailing from Rhode Island, formed in 1989 by vocalist and bassist Paul Chastain, guitarist Ric Menck, and drummer Jeffrey Underhill. They quickly became esteemed figures within the indie rock scene of the 1990s with their jangly guitars and melodic harmonies, which garnered a dedicated following. Velvet Crush signed to Creation Records in the UK, which was home to bands like Oasis and My Bloody Valentine, and their early work reflected the bright and propulsive sound of that era's pop sensibilities.
Their debut album, "In The Presence Of Greatness," produced by Matthew Sweet, set the template with its sunny melodies and earnest songwriting. As the band evolved, they preserved their melodic instincts while maturing in sound and depth, as evidenced in releases like "Teenage Symphonies To God" and "Heavy Changes." Although commercial success proved elusive, they were championed by critics and developed a loyal fanbase. With "Pre-Teen Symphonies," a nod to their influences and "Stereo Blues," a grittier take on their sound, Velvet Crush demonstrated the diversity of their craft. In the fluctuating music industry landscape, the band members often engaged in side projects, but occasional reunions and releases like "Soft Sounds" and "A Single Odyssey" signal a resilience and undiminished passion for the band's signature blend of vibrant, enduring pop-rock.
