Rotary Connection was a psychedelic soul band from Chicago, active primarily during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Formed in 1966 by Marshall Chess of Chess Records as part of the label's Cadet Concept imprint, the group aimed to fuse rock, soul, and experimental sounds into something totally new—and they succeeded in creating a truly genre-bending sound that was ahead of its time. The band featured a rotating lineup of talented musicians, but most notably included Minnie Riperton, who later launched a successful solo career.
Known for their lush orchestration, inventive arrangements, and powerful vocals, Rotary Connection released several albums that pushed the boundaries of traditional soul and R&B. Their Christmas album, “Peace,” as well as tracks like “Hey, Love” and their self-titled debut, are beloved cult classics. The band’s influence can be heard in later soul, funk, and even trip-hop music, and they remain a fascinating staple of the psychedelic era.
