Star Feminine Band is a dynamic all-female musical group hailing from the West African nation of Benin. Bursting onto the international scene with their self-titled debut album in 2020, the seven-member band, composed of young women and girls from the rural town of Natitingou, has been commended for their vibrant fusion of Afrobeat, traditional Beninese music, and messages of gender equality.
The band was formed with the support of a local school music project, aimed at empowering young girls through music. Ranging in age from 10 to 17 at the time of their debut, the members of Star Feminine Band defy the odds, overcoming societal barriers while advocating for women's rights through their lyrics in multiple languages, including Bariba, Waama, French, and Fon. With songs like "Femme Africaine" and "Le droit de l'enfant," they celebrate African womanhood and youth empowerment, quickly gaining fame not just for their infectious rhythms and melodies but also for their cultural impact and the inspiration they provide to a new generation of African women.
