Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth are a hip-hop duo from Mount Vernon, New York, whose collaboration in the early 1990s helped define the era's East Coast sound. The pair consists of Pete Rock, the DJ and producer known for his soulful and jazz-laden beats, and rapper C.L. Smooth, whose lyrical delivery is marked by his effortless flow and insightful storytelling. They first emerged on the scene with their 1991 EP "All Souled Out," which showcased their unique chemistry and laid the groundwork for their subsequent success.

Their first full-length album, "Mecca and the Soul Brother," released in 1992, is widely regarded as a classic, featuring the iconic single "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)," a poignant tribute to their friend and fallen dancer, Trouble T-Roy. The track is celebrated for its heartfelt lyrics and its sample-heavy, horn-laden beat that has since become emblematic of 90s hip-hop. The follow-up project, "The Main Ingredient," arrived in 1994, further cementing their reputation with its polished production and introspective rhymes. While they eventually parted ways to pursue solo careers, Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth's influence on hip-hop remains indisputable, with their soul-infused sound and thoughtful lyricism continuing to resonate with listeners and new generations of artists.
