Roland Hanna

Roland Hanna was an American jazz pianist known for his elegant touch, harmonic sophistication, and deep roots in both classical and jazz traditions. Born in 1932, Hanna was a classically trained musician who brought a refined sensibility to his work in jazz, performing with legends like Charles Mingus, Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, and Benny Goodman. He was equally comfortable in big band settings and intimate solo performances, showcasing his versatility and effortless swing.

Nicknamed “Sir Elf” (a title he playfully adopted after receiving a knighthood in Liberia), Hanna’s prolific career included both solo recordings and collaborations. He was also a respected educator, serving on the faculty at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. Whether interpreting standards with grace or exploring more cerebral compositions, Roland Hanna left an indelible mark on jazz piano with his lyrical expression and deep musical knowledge.
