Andrejs Jansons

Andrejs Jansons was a multifaceted musician, born on October 2, 1938, in Riga, Latvia. He was a composer, conductor, music teacher, and oboist who played a significant role in promoting Latvian music globally. After fleeing Latvia during World War II and settling in the United States in 1949, Jansons pursued his musical education at prestigious institutions like Julliard and the Manhattan School of Music. He became the musical director and lead conductor of the New York Latvian Concert Choir in 1975, with whom he performed numerous works by Latvian composers. Jansons was also known for his work with the Phoenix Woodwind Quintet, introducing classical music to thousands of schoolchildren. He received several awards for his contributions, including the Latvian Order of the Three Stars in 1996.

Jansons' compositions and arrangements span a wide range of genres, from musical theater to folk music. He was particularly dedicated to preserving and promoting Latvian cultural heritage through music. His work included conducting operas and cantatas, as well as composing music for plays like "Lolitas brīnumputns." Jansons passed away on July 25, 2022, leaving behind a legacy of enriching musical experiences for audiences worldwide.
