Re-TROS
Re-TROS (short for Rebuilding the Rights of Statues) is a groundbreaking Chinese post-punk trio from Nanjing, formed in 2003 by husband-and-wife duo Hua Dong (vocals, guitar) and Liu Min (bass, synths), later joined by drummer Ma Hui. Known for their hypnotic rhythms, angular guitar work, and brooding bilingual lyrics, they blend icy minimalism with danceable grooves, drawing comparisons to Gang of Four and Joy Division while carving their own dystopian sound. After gaining cult status in China’s indie scene, they broke internationally by touring with The Rapture and opening for Depeche Mode in 2017, cementing their rep with albums like *Before the Applause* (2017) and *Soundscapes for Celebration* (2023). Their recent work includes the pulsating theme song for *Three-Body*, China’s hit sci-fi TV adaptation, and remix collaborations that stretch their tense, cinematic aesthetic. Whether soundtracking existential dread or getting crowds moving, Re-TROS remains one of Asia’s most thrillingly unconventional bands.
