Célia Sampaio

Célia Sampaio is a renowned Brazilian reggae singer and composer, born on March 30, 1964, in São Luís, Maranhão. She grew up in the Bairro da Liberdade, a lower-income neighborhood, and initially pursued a career in nursing. However, her passion for music led her to join the Bloco Afro Akomabu, the first Afro block in Maranhão's carnival, in 1984. She was also a member of the band Guethos, the first reggae band to perform at the historic Teatro Arthur Azevedo. Known as the "First Lady of Reggae," Célia Sampaio began her solo career in the late 1990s and has released several notable albums, including "Diferente" and "Oyá." Her music often features compositions by local artists like Paulinho Akomabu, and she has performed in various states across Brazil and internationally.
