Elastica was a British alternative rock band that came to prominence during the Britpop movement of the mid-1990s. The group was formed in London in 1992 by Justine Frischmann after her departure from another influential Britpop band, Suede. Elastica's line-up included Frischmann as the lead vocalist and guitarist, alongside guitarist Donna Matthews, bassist Annie Holland, and drummer Justin Welch. Their music was characterized by a punk-influenced, guitar-driven sound that was both unapologetically brash and sleekly melodic.
The band's self-titled debut album, "Elastica," released in 1995, catapulted them into the spotlight. It became the fastest-selling debut album in UK history at the time and spawned several hit singles, including "Connection" and "Waking Up." After a prolonged hiatus and struggles with band dynamics and record company pressures, Elastica returned with their second album, "The Menace," in 2000, which leaned toward a more experimental sound. However, the album wasn't able to replicate the success of their debut. Shortly thereafter, Elastica disbanded in 2001. Posthumously, the compilation "The Radio One Sessions" was released in 2002, featuring recordings from the band’s BBC radio sessions and peeling back layers to reveal the raw energy that made Elastica a seminal force in the '90s alt-rock scene. Despite their brief tenure, Elastica left a lasting impact on the music world with their distinct sound and style.
