Regina Carter

Regina Carter is an acclaimed American jazz violinist, widely respected for her genre-defying approach to music. Born in Detroit, Michigan, on August 6, 1966, Carter grew into a prodigiously talented musician, one whose style deftly weaves through classical, jazz, folk, and world music. She began her violin studies at a young age and was a standout at Detroit’s renowned Cass Technical High School before furthering her education at the New England Conservatory of Music and then at Oakland University in Michigan, where she honed her formidable skills.

Carter's career took a significant leap forward when she released her solo album "Regina Carter" in 1995, and since then, she's continued to capture the imaginations of jazz enthusiasts and critics alike. Her album "Southern Comfort," which explores the folk music of her grandfather's era, and "Reverse Thread," which pays homage to traditional African music, showcase her ability to infuse contemporary jazz with rich historical and cultural influences. Carter's distinct blend of classical and modern jazz stylings was further celebrated in albums such as "I'll Be Seeing You: A Sentimental Journey" and "Paganini: After A Dream," underlining her adaptability and evocative musical storytelling. A recipient of the MacArthur "genius" grant in 2006, Regina Carter has earned a glowing reputation on the global stage, celebrated for her innovative approach and the emotional depth she brings to every performance.
