Richard Dering was an English composer active during the early 17th century, best known for his sacred vocal music. Although he spent a significant part of his career abroad, particularly in Italy, Dering brought a touch of the continental style to English music, blending the rich expressiveness of the Italian Baroque with traditional English choral textures. He composed numerous motets, anthems, and madrigals, many of which have endured as favorites among early music ensembles today.
Dering was a Roman Catholic during a time when that could limit opportunities in Protestant England, so he spent time serving in Catholic courts in Europe, including working in Brussels. Despite the religious and political tensions of his era, his music displayed both devotional depth and technical brilliance, showcasing his adaptability and artistic sensitivity. His work is still performed and recorded today, particularly within the context of English Renaissance and early Baroque vocal repertoire.
