Relient K is an American rock band formed in Canton, Ohio, in 1998 by Matt Thiessen (lead vocals, guitar, piano), Matt Hoopes (guitar, backing vocals), and Brian Pittman (bass). The band is known for their melodic pop-punk style, often infused with piano, as well as their Christian-themed lyrics. Their name is derived from guitarist Hoopes' automobile, a Plymouth Reliant K car, with a slight modification to the spelling.
Over the years, Relient K has gone through various lineup changes but maintained a dedicated fan base with their energetic live shows and relatable songwriting. The band broke into the mainstream with their fourth album, "Mmhmm," released in 2004, which included hits like "Be My Escape" and "Who I Am Hates Who I've Been." They have experimented with various genres throughout their career, ranging from punk to piano rock to more pop-centric sounds. Some of their notable later works include the introspective "Forget and Not Slow Down" (2009) and the vibrant "Air for Free" (2016). The band has also released a number of EPs and specialty projects, showcasing their versatility and playful approach to music, such as their cover album "Is for Karaoke." With a career spanning over two decades, Relient K has left a significant mark on the alternative rock and Christian music scenes.
