Olivia Vermeulen is a Dutch **mezzo-soprano** who’s become one of the standout voices on today’s classical scene, moving effortlessly from early music to brand-new works. Praised for the “exceptional wealth of colors” in her voice and singing of “exquisite, inexhaustible sweetness,” she’s in demand on major international stages and with top orchestras and conductors. She has appeared at houses and festivals such as the Berlin State Opera, Opéra national de Paris, Bregenz Festival, Salzburg Festival, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, in roles ranging from Donna Elvira in Mozart’s *Don Giovanni* to parts in contemporary operas by Thomas Larcher, Philippe Manoury, and John Adams.
Alongside opera and oratorio, Olivia has a real passion for **song and lieder**. Her solo albums *Dirty Minds* and *Hello Darkness*—both made with pianist Jan Philip Schulze—picked up major prizes like the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik and Edison Klassiek, and helped cement her reputation as an adventurous storyteller who’s happy to mix Monteverdi, Schubert, Billie Eilish, Nick Cave, and more in one program. Their third collaboration, *In Heaven – Songs for a Trip to Space*, continues that playful, genre-blurring approach with a space-themed journey that weaves together art song, contemporary music, pop, and even NASA sound recordings. A native of the Netherlands, she studied in Detmold and Berlin with Julie Kaufmann and refined her craft in masterclasses with legends such as Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Thomas Quasthoff, grounding her imaginative programming in serious vocal and musical pedigree.
