Roman Berger

Roman Berger (1930-2020) was a Slovak composer, pianist, and musicologist whose emotionally charged works blended modernist classical traditions with philosophical depth. Born in Čadca, Czechoslovakia, he studied at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava and became a key figure in Central Europe’s post-war avant-garde scene. His compositions, like the haunting *Korczak in Memoriam* (honoring Holocaust hero Janusz Korczak) and the introspective *Piano Sonata No. 3*, often grappled with themes of human resilience and moral conscience, reflecting his lifelong engagement with ethics and social justice.
