Els Janssens-Vanmunster is a versatile mezzo-soprano with a rich background spanning twelve centuries of classical music, from medieval to contemporary styles. She studied singing at the conservatories of Liège and Toulouse, with further specialization in medieval music at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. Beyond her formal training, she has a degree in Speech-Language Pathology and continued her musical education in jazz and classical singing in Antwerp and Liège. As the artistic director of Mora Vocis since 2011, Els Janssens creatively blends medieval and modern music with other art forms like circus, theater, video, and dance, emphasizing the voice as a physical and expressive instrument. Her career includes collaborations with renowned ensembles like Ensemble Leones and Ensemble Dialogos, as well as active involvement in contemporary music creation and improvisation.
In addition to performing, Els Janssens is dedicated to teaching singing and stage presence through master classes and workshops. She also serves as a musical, linguistic, and scenic advisor to various artists and ensembles. Her international career is marked by numerous recordings and performances that showcase her passion for both historical and living musical traditions, making her a unique and dynamic figure in the world of classical music.
