Gyula Csapó is a contemporary Hungarian composer born on September 26, 1955, in Pápa, Hungary. He studied composition at the Bartók Béla Conservatory and the Liszt Ferenc Music Academy, where he graduated in 1981. During his studies, he was influenced by notable composers such as György Kurtág, Péter Eötvös, and Albert Simon, and he also received private lessons from Zoltán Jeney. In 1979, he joined the New Music Studio Budapest. Csapó furthered his education in electronic music in Paris and later under Morton Feldman between 1983 and 1987. He earned his PhD in 1989 and has taught at McGill University and Princeton University before becoming a professor at the University of Saskatchewan in 1994.
Csapó is known for his diverse compositions, including chamber and electronic works. Some of his notable releases include "Déjà? Kojâ?" and "Concerto for Viola and a Changing Environment." His music often explores complex and innovative sounds, reflecting his extensive background in both classical and experimental music traditions. Csapó's work has been recognized internationally, with his "Concerto" being named "The Pop Music of the Year" in 2009. His compositions are often characterized by their use of fragmented structures and experimental approaches to sound and timbre.
