Gossip (initially styled as The Gossip) is an American indie rock band that originated in Searcy, Arkansas in 1999 and later based themselves in Portland, Oregon. Known for their raw sound and impassioned sociopolitical lyrics, Gossip was fronted by the exuberant and outspoken Beth Ditto, with guitarist Brace Paine and drummer Hannah Blilie rounding out the trio. The band injected punk's rebel energy into danceable rock anthems, and Ditto's commanding presence and powerful vocal abilities quickly became the hallmark of Gossip's identity.
The band's early work was rooted in punk's DIY ethic, but they gained widespread recognition with their 2006 studio album "Standing in the Way of Control," which responded to the US government's refusal to legalize same-sex marriage with a fiercely defiant dance-punk sound. Commercial success and critical acclaim followed with the subsequent release of "Music For Men" in 2009 and "A Joyful Noise" in 2012, the latter seeing the band delve into pop and dance music with a polished production. They showcased an ability to transform their raw punk beginnings into catchy, disco-infused tracks that could command both the radio waves and dancefloors. Notable singles like "Move In The Right Direction" and "Perfect World" encapsulated their evolution. Their live performances, exemplified in the album "Live in Liverpool," captured the band's electrifying and communal live energy. After their global success, Gossip disbanded in 2016, leaving behind a legacy of challenging norms and celebrating individuality through their music.
