The Baylor Project is an enchanting collaboration that represents the marriage of jazz and soul in more ways than one. At its core are the husband-and-wife team of drummer Marcus Baylor and vocalist Jean Baylor. Marcus, a former member of the Grammy Award-winning Yellowjackets, brings a dynamic and propulsive energy to their music. Jean, who once graced the R&B world as half of the duo Zhané, adds a lush and emotive vocal texture that draws from both her gospel roots and her love of jazz. Together, they create a sound that is deeply rooted in African American musical traditions, exploring and expanding the boundaries between jazz, gospel, and R&B.
Since their debut, The Baylor Project has received critical acclaim and recognition from the jazz and soul music communities. Their first album, "The Journey," released in 2017, was celebrated for its thoughtful exploration of life, love, and heritage, earning them two Grammy nominations. Subsequent releases, including "Generations" and "Sit on Down," have continued to showcase their ability to craft stories that resonate on a universal level while remaining deeply personal. Through live recordings, such as "The Evening: Live At APPARATUS," they capture the magic of their performances and the intimate connection they share with their audience. The Baylor Project is not just a musical act but a heartfelt project that celebrates the rich tapestry of Black musical expression, connecting past, present, and future generations through their art.
