Black Flower

Black Flower is an innovative ethio-jazz ensemble hailing from Belgium, led by the creative force of saxophonist and composer Nathan Daems. The band's sound is an intoxicating blend of Ethiopian jazz fused with influences ranging from afro-funk, psych, dub, and exotic soundscapes that transcend geographical boundaries. Formed in the early 2010s, Black Flower has been captivating audiences with their hypnotic rhythms and psychedelic ambiance that echo the golden age of Ethiopian music while pushing into new, uncharted territories.

The group’s discography reflects their journey through musical exploration and growth. Their breakthrough album, "Abyssinia Afterlife" (2014), drew inspiration from Ethiopian mythology and culture, setting the theme for their future works. Follow-ups such as "Artifacts" (2017), "Future Flora" (2019), and "Magma" (an EP released in 2020), have continued to build upon their signature style, inviting listeners into an ever-evolving world of groove and trance. Black Flower's passion for experimenting with sound is clearly evident in releases like "Intermediate State" (an EP from 2018) and "Ghost Radio" (2021), in which they delve into more esoteric and cinematic soundscapes. With "Ray" (2022), the band once again reconciles the past with the future, crafting timelessly compelling music that defies simple categorization. Their musical craftsmanship and visionary compositions have established Black Flower as a beacon in the realm of contemporary ethio-jazz and world music.
