Peter Erasmus Lange-Müller (1 December 1850 – 26 February 1926) was a significant Danish composer who became a central figure in the musical culture of Denmark during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Frederiksberg, he was largely self-taught in music, developing his talents through avid study and by surrounding himself with the musical life of Copenhagen.
Lange-Müller's compositions are known for their romantic style, influenced by the Danish folk tradition as well as the German Romantic composers of his time. His body of work includes songs, piano music, chamber music, and stage works, with particular acclaim for his songs which are characterized by their melodic beauty and deeply felt sentiment. "Der Var Engang" (Once Upon a Time) and "Renaissance" are among his notable compositions that reflect his penchant for setting fairy tales and romantic literature to music. His legacy is one of emotional expression and nationalistic spirit, helping to define the musical identity of Denmark during a period of burgeoning cultural pride.
