Russ Tolman was a cornerstone of the 1980s L.A. underground rock scene, best known as the frontman and guitarist of the paisley-tinged band True West, who helped define the jangly, psychedelic sounds of the Paisley Underground movement alongside peers like The Dream Syndicate and Green on Red. After True West disbanded, Tolman carved out a solo career blending gritty Americana, folk-rock storytelling, and sharp-witted lyricism, earning a cult following for albums like *Goodbye El Dorado* and *Los Angeles*. His later work, including the Fred Neil tribute album *Russ Sings Fred* and introspective releases like *Life* and *I Love Lightning*, showcased his knack for reinvention and reverence for songcraft. A collaborator with artists like Chuck Prophet and Steve Wynn, Tolman’s music always carried a warm, lived-in quality—equal parts California cool and rootsy sincerity—until his passing in 2024.
