Don Cherry

Don Cherry, born Donald Eugene Cherry on November 18, 1936, was a pioneering American jazz trumpeter known for his groundbreaking work in free jazz and world fusion. With a career spanning several decades, Cherry was renowned for his innovative approach to music, infusing traditional jazz with elements from various cultures and musical traditions. He was a key figure in the avant-garde scene, often collaborating with other jazz legends, such as Ornette Coleman, with whom he played a pivotal role in the development of the free jazz movement in the 1960s.

Beyond his partnership with Coleman, Don Cherry's eclectic sensibilities led him to work with a diverse array of musicians, from the jazz sphere and beyond. His discography includes the influential album "Eternal Rhythm," which was recorded live at the Berlin Jazz Festival and marked a significant step into world music for Cherry. His work with the multi-cultural ensemble Codona, which blended Asian, African, and Indian music with jazz, highlighted his commitment to cross-cultural musical exploration. In addition to his trumpet playing, Cherry also experimented with various instruments from around the world, further broadening his musical palette. Despite his passing on October 19, 1995, Don Cherry's legacy continues to resonate, influencing generations of jazz musicians who seek to push the envelope of traditional jazz boundaries.
