The Original Coon-Sanders Nighthawk Orchestra

The Original Coon-Sanders Nighthawk Orchestra was a popular American jazz dance band that rose to fame in the 1920s and early 1930s. The group was co-led by pianist Carleton Coon and drummer Joe Sanders, and they were among the first bands to gain national popularity through regular radio broadcasts. Known for their vibrant and energetic style, the band helped define the sound of the Jazz Age, earning a devoted following across the country.

They got their start in Kansas City and quickly made waves for their tight arrangements, lively performances, and engaging stage presence. Their broadcasts from Chicago's Blackhawk restaurant were especially influential, and the group became known as the "Nighthawks" due to their late-night airings. Despite the eventual dissolution of the band following Carleton Coon's untimely death in 1932, their recordings remain a vivid snapshot of early swing and dance band music.
