Coheed and Cambria is an American progressive rock band formed in Nyack, New York, in 1995. Founded by vocalist/guitarist Claudio Sanchez, guitarist Travis Stever, bassist Zach Cooper, and drummer Josh Eppard, the band is known for its concept albums that make up a science fiction storyline called The Amory Wars, a series created by Claudio Sanchez. This narrative spans most of their albums and is expressed through their lyrics as well as Sanchez's accompanying comic book series. The band's music is characterized by dynamic shifts in tempo and genre, intertwining Sanchez's high-pitched, emotive vocals with an aggressive, intricate, and often-heavy musical backdrop.
Coheed and Cambria achieved mainstream success with their 2003 album "In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3" and further their popularity with "Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness" in 2005. The band's style has evolved over their numerous albums, exemplified in their most recent releases. "Vaxis – Act II: A Window of the Waking Mind" is the latest chapter of their ongoing saga, preceded by "The Unheavenly Creatures" which continued the band's return to their conceptual narrative after the more personal, non-conceptual 2015 album "The Color Before The Sun". Even as they maintain their signature concept album approach, Coheed and Cambria are not averse to lighter fare, demonstrated by tracks like "Jessie's Girl 2," a sequel to Rick Springfield's 1981 hit—in which Springfield himself makes a guest appearance. Their acoustic renditions like "The Liars Club (Acoustic)" and "The Gutter (Acoustic)" showcase the band's ability to strip back their sound and highlight the emotive storytelling that sits at the core of their music.
