José Fernández Torres, widely known by his stage name Tomatito, is a Spanish flamenco guitarist of exceptional artistry, whose musical career has been marked by innovation and collaboration. Born in Almería, Spain, on August 20, 1958, Tomatito hails from a family with a rich flamenco heritage. His father and grandfather were both amateur guitarists, and by the young age of ten, Tomatito was already performing publicly.
Tomatito's professional break came through his relationship with legendary flamenco singer Camarón de la Isla. The two formed a prolific partnership that lasted until Camarón's death in 1992. This collaboration is considered one of the most important in the history of flamenco music, producing timeless works and pushing the boundaries of the flamenco genre.
As a soloist, Tomatito has garnered international acclaim for his blend of traditional flamenco with other musical genres, something evident in his diverse discography. His album "Soy Flamenco" is a testament to his deep respect for the traditional forms, while "Spain Forever" reveals his interest in fusion, collaborating with pianist Michel Camilo. Tomatito's virtuosity was also showcased in his interpretation of "Rodrigo: Concierto De Aranjuez", which highlights his ability to cross over into classical Spanish guitar repertoires. With multiple Grammy Awards to his name, Tomatito continually represents the evolution of flamenco music on the global stage, making him one of Spain's most influential contemporary flamenco guitarists.
