Alireza Mashayekhi is one of Iran’s pioneering contemporary composers and a key figure in the development of modern and avant-garde music in the country. Born in 1940, he has been instrumental in fusing traditional Persian musical elements with modern Western techniques—from twelve-tone serialism to electroacoustic experimentation. His career spans decades, during which he's composed orchestral works, chamber music, and electronic pieces that challenge and expand the idea of Iranian musical identity.
Mashayekhi is also known for co-founding the Tehran Contemporary Music Group and the Iranian Orchestra for New Music, both of which have significantly shaped Iran’s contemporary classical scene. His works, such as "Symphony No. 4 (Zagros)," "Avec Chopin," and "Tehran Dual," reflect his dedication to sonic innovation, often blending electronic sounds with acoustic instruments in deeply expressive ways. A trailblazer in every sense, Mashayekhi continues to inspire a new generation of composers both within Iran and around the world.
