Rockwell, born Kennedy William Gordy on March 15, 1964, is an American musician and singer-songwriter known primarily for his 1984 smash hit "Somebody’s Watching Me." He is the son of Motown founder and CEO Berry Gordy, which has often been noted as contributing to his early exposure to the music industry, although Rockwell signed to the Motown label under a pseudonym to avoid accusations of nepotism.
Despite his familial connections, Rockwell managed to carve out his own slice of pop history with "Somebody’s Watching Me," which featured backing vocals from Michael Jackson and Jermaine Jackson. This paranoia-fueled anthem about the fear of being watched became an instant classic, reaching high positions on charts around the world and becoming a staple on radio and later, in the era of the internet, a perennial favorite for remixes and samples. After his initial burst of fame, Rockwell struggled to replicate the success of his debut single but has remained a notable figure in '80s music nostalgia. In recent times, due to the enduring appeal and meme-worthy quality of "Somebody's Watching Me," various remixes and editions, such as the "Somebody’s Watching Me (Syzz Remix)" and the "Somebody’s Watching Me (Sped Up)," have been released, introducing the eerie pop tune to new generations and digital platforms.
