Jad Fair

Jad Fair is an American musician and artist best known as the co-founder of the influential lo-fi, avant-garde rock band Half Japanese. Formed in the late 1970s with his brother David Fair, Half Japanese became known for their raw, unfiltered sound and outsider approach to music, often eschewing traditional song structures and tunings. Jad's distinctive vocal style and lyrical themes—blending humor, horror, romance, and surrealism—have become a hallmark of his work.

Apart from Half Japanese, Jad Fair has built a prolific solo career and collaborated with a wide range of artists across genres, including Daniel Johnston, Teenage Fanclub, Yo La Tengo, and Kramer. His discography spans hundreds of releases, showcasing his relentless creativity and DIY ethic. Fair is also a visual artist, known for his whimsical paper-cut artwork that often graces his album covers. His contributions to underground music and art have earned him a cult following and a lasting legacy in the indie and experimental music scenes.
