Luniz

Luniz is an American hip hop duo from Oakland, California, formed by rappers Yukmouth (Jerold Ellis III) and Numskull (Garrick Husbands). The group rose to fame in the mid-1990s with their platinum-selling hit single "I Got 5 on It", a track that sampled Club Nouveau's "Why You Treat Me So Bad" and quickly became a hip hop anthem. The success of this single led to the release of their debut album, "Operation Stackola" in 1995, which peaked at number 1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop charts. Renowned for their laid-back style and West Coast beats, Luniz became a significant part of the 90s hip hop scene, contributing to the soundscape that defined the era.

With a career spanning over two decades, Luniz has experienced changes and evolutions in their music. Despite a hiatus and solo ventures for both Yukmouth and Numskull, they have continued to release music, maintaining their presence in the industry. Some of their recent releases like "No Pressure" and "Surrounded by Warriors" showcase their enduring ties to the Bay Area sound and their ability to connect to both their core fanbase and newer audiences. A testament to their continued relevance was their 2019 single "I Got 5 On Us", a nod to their iconic hit adapted for the Jordan Peele film "Us", exhibiting their ability to bridge their legacy with contemporary culture. Luniz remains synonymous with the classic West Coast hip-hop sound, and their persistent creativity signals that they've retained their position in the rap game.
