Broken English Club is the brainchild of British electronic musician and producer Oliver Ho, who has been a prominent figure in the techno scene since the mid-1990s. However, with this project, Ho delves into darker and more industrial territories, merging his techno roots with elements of post-punk, noise, and EBM (Electronic Body Music). The moniker encapsulates the brooding, dystopian ethos that runs through the music, characterized by its abrasive synths, unrelenting beats, and often haunting vocal samples.
Since its inception, Broken English Club has presented a body of work that is both thematically cohesive and sonically adventurous, exploring the disquiet of contemporary life. The "White Rats" series, a trilogy of albums, stands as a testament to Ho's world-building through music, painting grim, cinematic landscapes over the course of "White Rats," "White Rats II," and "White Rats III." Alongside these full-length offerings, releases such as "The English Beach," imbued with a peculiarly British sense of gloom, and "The Artificial Animal," with its series of edits, demonstrate a relentless pursuit of evolution in sound and mood. The "Puritan EP" and other works such as "Snub" and "Nil By Mouth" further showcase Broken English Club's adeptness at molding aural tension and industrial grit into expansive, thought-provoking music.
