The NHK Symphony Orchestra (Nippon Hōsō Kyōkai Symphony Orchestra) is one of the most prestigious and long-standing classical ensembles in Japan, having a rich heritage that champions both Western and Japanese classical traditions. Founded in 1926 as the New Symphony Orchestra, it was the first professional symphony orchestra in Japan. Later, in 1951, it was reorganized and took its current name, reflecting its close association with Japan Broadcasting Corporation (Nippon Hōsō Kyōkai).
Known for its broad repertoire and high level of musicianship, the NHK Symphony Orchestra has been led by a series of distinguished conductors and has invited an array of world-renowned soloists to perform with them. Over the recent years, they have garnered critical acclaim for their performances and recordings of a wide range of composers, as evidenced by their most recent releases, which include grand classical works like Bartok's "Concerto for Orchestra" and Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring" as well as contemporary Japanese compositions such as "波の盆 武満徹 映像音楽集" which showcase their versatility. Their commitment to cultural exchange is also represented in their diverse discography, which includes "Aconcagua: Piazzolla, Falla, Ginastera & Guarnieri," demonstrating their enthusiasm for Latin American composers, as well as "月光 〜ベートーヴェン・アンソロジー〜," highlighting their deep respect for the Western classical music tradition.
