Rastrelli Cello Quartett

The Rastrelli Cello Quartet is a distinctive ensemble that has honed a unique niche within the classical music landscape, skillfully blending the rich, deep tones of the cello with the intricate melodies of various genres. Named after the 18th-century architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli, known for his design of the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg, the quartet exhibits the same level of artistry and craftsmanship through their music. Founded in 2002 by four Russian cellists, the quartet currently comprises Kira Kraftzoff (founder and artistic director), Kirill Timofeev, Misha Degtjareff, and Sergio Drabkin, who arrange most of their music.

The Rastrelli Cello Quartet has carved out a reputation for their inventive and genre-defying projects, interpreting non-traditional music for the classical cello ensemble. Among their recent releases, "Rastrelli Effect" and "Cello Effect" (arranged by Sergio Drabkin) showcase their ability to amalgamate classical sensibilities with contemporary influences. They pay homage to their roots with works like "Russian Voices," while "Small Leningrad Symphony" is a nod to the depth and breadth of classical Russian compositions. However, the quartet is not limited to classical and Russian music; their versatility is further evidenced through albums like "Feidman Plays Beatles!" which brings a unique spin to the iconic songs of the legendary British band, and ventures such as "Cello in Jazz" and "Cello in Buenos Aires," which see them exploring the rhythms and melodies of jazz and Argentine tango, respectively. With a broad spectrum of styles under their belts, the Rastrelli Cello Quartet continues to push the boundaries of the classical genre, inviting audiences to experience the cello through a fresh and exhilarating lens.
