Bobby "Boris" Pickett was an American singer, actor, and songwriter, best known for his creation of the timeless Halloween anthem, "Monster Mash." Born Robert George Pickett on February 11, 1938, in Somerville, Massachusetts, he cultivated a strong interest in acting from an early age, which eventually led him to Hollywood. However, it was his penchant for mimicry and a novelty song that cemented his place in music history. In 1962, Pickett co-wrote "Monster Mash" with Leonard Capizzi, drawing inspiration from the dance craze phenomenon and his own Boris Karloff impression. The song was a massive success, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart just before Halloween that year.
Despite the typecasting that followed his iconic hit, Pickett attempted to replicate his success with several other monster-themed tunes, none of which achieved the legendary status of "Monster Mash." His career included a few modest acting roles, but it was primarily defined by his Halloween hit, leading to the release of multiple versions and remixes of the song over the years, including "Monster Mash (Fast And Frightening Mix)," "Monster Mash (Monster Party Spoooky Versions)," and "Monster Mash (Next Habit Remix)." Pickett passed away on April 25, 2007, but his legacy lives on with "Monster Mash" being an enduring holiday novelty classic, inseparable from Halloween celebrations and a playful reminder of the golden age of monster-themed pop culture.
