Budgie

Budgie was a Welsh hard rock and heavy metal band formed in Cardiff in 1967. Often cited as one of the pioneers of heavy metal, their sound blended elements of blues rock with a powerful and sometimes quirky approach to riff-driven songwriting. The band's classic line-up featured Burke Shelley on vocals and bass, with guitarists Tony Bourge and later John Thomas, and a rotating cast of drummers over the years.

Budgie gained cult status for their energetic performances and unique sound that influenced numerous bands in the metal scene, including Metallica, who famously covered their song "Breadfan." Albums like their self-titled debut Budgie (1971), Squawk (1972), and Never Turn Your Back on a Friend (1973) are now considered heavy rock classics. Despite not achieving major commercial success, Budgie’s legacy lives on through a dedicated fanbase and their lasting impact on the genre.
