Robert Rental

Robert Rental was a pioneering figure in the late-1970s/early-1980s UK DIY electronic and post-punk scene, known for his raw, experimental approach to synthesizers and tape manipulation. Hailing from Port Glasgow, Scotland, he became a key collaborator with artists like Thomas Leer (as the duo Rental/Leer) and Daniel Miller of The Normal, with whom he toured and released the influential live album *Live at West Runton Pavilion, 6-3-79*. His work, characterized by haunting textures and lo-fi ingenuity, laid groundwork for industrial and ambient music.

Though his output was sparse, releases like *Mental Detentions* and *Different Voices for You… Demos 1980* capture his knack for moody, fragmented soundscapes. Rental’s legacy grew posthumously after his death in 2000, with reissues by labels like Dark Entries and Optimo Music reintroducing his work to new generations of experimental electronic fans. His partnership with Glenn Wallis (under the name Robert Rental & Glenn Wallis) further showcased his restless creativity in blending punk energy with avant-garde electronics.
