Dave McKenna was a legendary jazz pianist known for his distinctive "three-handed" swing style. Born in Woonsocket, Rhode Island in 1930, McKenna began his professional career at just 17, playing with big bands led by Charlie Ventura and Woody Herman. Throughout his career, he collaborated with jazz greats like Stan Getz, Gene Krupa, and Zoot Sims.
McKenna was particularly renowned as a solo pianist, with a unique ability to create a full band sound on his own. He developed a strong left-hand technique that allowed him to play bass lines while simultaneously handling melodies and harmonies with his right hand. Despite his immense talent, McKenna remained a humble musician, often described as a "musician's musician" who was more revered within the jazz community than known to the general public.
