Orlando "Cachaíto" López

Orlando "Cachaíto" López was a legendary Cuban bassist best known for his work with the Buena Vista Social Club and for being one of the most influential figures in Afro-Cuban music. Born into a musical dynasty—his father was Orestes López and his uncle the celebrated bassist Israel "Cachao" López—Cachaíto carried forward the family legacy, modernizing Cuban bass playing with his innovative style and deep rhythmic sense.

Despite being a central figure in Cuban music for decades, Cachaíto became internationally recognized in the late 1990s through his collaboration with the Buena Vista Social Club. His 2001 solo album, simply titled "Cachaito," showcased his versatility and flair, blending Cuban son with jazz, reggae, and funk influences. Until his passing in 2009, Cachaíto remained a respected elder of Cuban music, admired for both his technical brilliance and his contribution to preserving and evolving traditional Cuban sounds.
