Parviz Meshkatian was a master of Persian classical music, whose virtuosity on the santur, a type of hammered dulcimer, elevated the instrument to new heights. Born on February 15, 1955, in the city of Nishapur, Iran, he was not only a prominent musician but also an acclaimed composer and researcher who deeply influenced the landscape of Iranian traditional music.
Meshkatian studied music at the Tehran Music Conservatory, where he honed his skills under the tutelage of luminaries such as Abdollah Davami, Faramarz Payvar, and Dariush Safvat. His profound understanding of Persian music theory and composition, combined with his exceptional skill with the santur, made him a highly respected figure in the music community. A founding member of the Aref Ensemble and later the Sheyda Ensemble, he collaborated with other giants of Persian music such as Mohammad Reza Shajarian. Meshkatian's works often reflect a profound reverence for Persian literature and poetry, which is inherent in albums such as "Bamdad (Dawn)" and "Vatan -e- Man (My Homeland) Iranian Traditional Music." His contributions to the world of music extended beyond performance to education, with numerous students learning under his guidance. Despite his untimely passing on September 21, 2009, Parviz Meshkatian's legacy endures through his inspiring compositions and enduring influence on the Persian music scene.
