Xaver Scharwenka (1850–1924) was a Polish-German pianist, composer, and teacher known for his virtuosic piano compositions and Romantic-style works. He was especially celebrated for his piano concertos and his lively "Polish Dances," which gained popularity in the late 19th century. Scharwenka was also an influential educator, founding a well-regarded conservatory in Berlin. As a pianist, he toured extensively, earning acclaim for his expressive and technically dazzling performances. Though his music faded somewhat from the mainstream repertoire, modern recordings have helped revive interest in his works, showcasing his melodic charm and brilliant craftsmanship.
