Negu Gorriak

Negu Gorriak, which translates to "Harsh Winters" in Basque, was a radical and influential band that emerged from the vibrant music scene of the Basque Country in Spain. Formed in 1990 by brothers Fermin and Iñigo Muguruza, along with Kaki Arkarazo, the band's style was an incendiary blend of punk, rock, hip hop, and reggae, fused with unabashedly political and anti-fascist lyrics that resonated within their socio-political milieu.

As musicians and activists, Negu Gorriak stood as a bold voice against oppression, drawing attention to issues such as Basque nationalism, social injustice, and racism. Their discography, including influential albums "Gure Jarrera" (Our Attitude), "Borreroak Baditu Milaka Aurpegi" (The Executioner Has Thousands of Faces) and "Ideia Zabaldu" (Spread the Idea), showcases the band's dedication to craft, message, and an aggressive style that garnered them a dedicated following not just in Spain, but internationally as well. The controversy that often surrounded their work and the legal battles, particularly with their song "Ustelkeria" which criticized Spanish police, only underscored their importance in the fight for freedom of speech. Although they disbanded in 2001, their legacy continues to influence and inspire artists and activists around the world. The compilation "Negu Gorriak 1990-2001" serves as a powerful testament to their decade of music and resistance.
