The Botany Boyz are a prominent Southern hip-hop group hailing from Houston, Texas, that emerged from the creative furnace of the city's rap scene in the mid-1990s. Named after Botany Lane, the area where they grew up, the group was part of the larger collective known as the Screwed Up Click—a conglomerate of rappers united by the late DJ Screw, who was famous for his innovative "chopped and screwed" style of remixing music. Original members included C-Note, Will-Lean, D-Red, Head, Big Pic, and the late rapper Big Hawk—brother of the famed Fat Pat.
Their music is characterized by the slow, woozy beats typical of the "chopped and screwed" technique, coupled with tales of street life and real experiences in their neighborhood, Cloverland. The Botany Boyz gained notoriety with the release of their debut album, "Thought of Many Ways," in 1997, which is hailed as a classic in Houston's underground hip-hop circuit. Further solidifying their place in the Southern rap legacy were follow-up projects such as "Forever Botany," the "Screwed Up Version" of the same album emphasizing their dedication to DJ Screw's legacy, and their works "Smokin N Lean’n" and "Cloverland," each contributing to the raw and authentic soundscape that has come to define Houston hip-hop. Despite evolving trends in the music industry, the Botany Boyz maintain a cult following and continue to symbolize the resilience and creativity of their community in Cloverland.
