The Standells

The Standells were a garage rock band from Los Angeles, best known for their gritty 1966 hit "Dirty Water," which has since become an anthem of Boston despite the band's California roots. Formed in the early 1960s, they originally played cover songs in clubs before evolving into a raw, proto-punk outfit known for their rebellious attitude and fuzzed-out guitar sound. The group included singer and keyboardist Larry Tamblyn, guitarist Tony Valentino, bassist Gary Lane, and drummer Dick Dodd, a former Mouseketeer whose distinctive vocals helped define their biggest hits.

The Standells were often associated with the mid-‘60s garage rock explosion and the "Nuggets" compilation era, garnering a cult following for tracks like "Sometimes Good Guys Don’t Wear White" and "Why Pick On Me." Though their mainstream success was relatively brief, their influence on punk and alternative rock would resonate for decades, securing their legacy as one of the rawest and most authentic voices of 1960s garage rock.
