Percy Mayfield was an American rhythm-and-blues singer and songwriter most famous for his distinctively mellow voice and his highly personal songwriting. Born on August 12, 1920 in Minden, Louisiana, Mayfield moved to Los Angeles in his early 20s, where he began his career in music. Dubbed the "Poet of the Blues," he crafted profoundly emotive songs that often reflected the trials and tribulations of life and love.
Mayfield's career truly took off with his 1950 hit "Please Send Me Someone to Love," which became a number one R&B hit and established him as a composer with a sophisticated grasp on the nuances of heartfelt lyrics. This strength as a lyricist led to his songs being recorded by a number of other artists, including Ray Charles, who famously covered Mayfield's "Hit the Road Jack." Percy's style was characterized by his smooth baritone voice, suave delivery, and unerringly elegant turn of phrase. Although a car accident in 1952 left him with facial injuries that sidelined his performing career, he continued to be a prolific songwriter. Sadly, Percy Mayfield passed away on August 11, 1984, leaving behind a rich legacy in the world of blues and R&B music.
